專業概況

The Department of Political Science endeavors to develop in its graduates an understanding of how political systems operate, with what consequences and alternatives. The primary focus is on inculcating analytical and critical habits of thinking - habits that will be beneficial to society irrespective of professional choices. The Department is oriented toward assisting students who are preparing to go to graduate school, law school or for careers in the public sector and non-profit service. In the process, we hope to create a body of students and citizens who are informed, who have the intellectual skills, and who are also cognizant of humanistic values. The Department, in line with the values of the social sciences, seeks to engender a student body that is aware of the social and political structure within which we live – thus fulfilling the University’s mission and goals for the general education of our undergraduate students.

Political Science examines how policies are made within and among nations in the contemporary world. Students in Political Science learn to analyze, describe, and predict political behavior. The discipline is a science, but the study of people and power also requires an understanding of both rational and sentimental behaviors in politics.

CSU Bakersfield offers a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Degree in Political Science. Within the major, there are emphases and related curriculum programs designed to advance specialized career objectives:

Political Science Careers

Political Science graduates work in a highly diverse set of social organizations, including those who are self-employed and run their own businesses. Beyond those answers note that the American Political Science Association reports on political science graduates in just under sixty professional roles. Not surprisingly, the data show that there is no area in which most Political Science graduates work. In addition, the graduate should consider if additional education beyond the B.A. will be necessary to get you to an end state. In extreme instances a doctorate should be considered. That is not typical, however. In the 21st Century, a master's or law degree is highly desirable. If the latter, the field might be one of several: Political Science, International Relations, Public Administration, Business, or Education, as examples. For those intending to go into K-12 teaching, a credential is necessary. The APSA data that follow show distributions but are no substitute for careful thought and discussion with a faculty mentor about what to do with the degree after graduation.
