Engage in the “fundamental science” by exploring matter, energy and the rules that govern them that are vital to scientific understanding in everyday life. Learn from distinguished faculty who will expose you to all the major branches of physics, from classical physics and quantum mechanics, to the study of the tiniest subatomic particles and the exploration of entire galaxies.

Concentration Options

Environmental Science

Integrate the depth and diversity of study in the sciences with a special interest in the environment.

Geophysics

Develop knowledge of the physical laws that govern the earth and a range of geology topics such as the earth’s interior, crustal movements, soil composition, mineral and fossil fuel resources.

This concentration in the Physics Department provides depth and a diversity of study in the sciences for students with a special interest in the environment. Cortland's resources for teaching and research in this area are extensive. Special facilities at Hoxie Gorge, the Outdoor Education Center and Brauer Education Center play a role in the program.
